Dusting off the disappointment of having lost out on the premier league title narrowly, Ron Atkinson and his Aston Villa side were targeting a strong run in UEFA cup which would generate additional revenue for the club the following year. The news came during a time where Villa was finalizing a shirt sponsor deal to take over from their existing sponsors “Mita” and they were reported to be close to a £2 million for a three-year deal.

Manager Ron Atkinson also said he was looking at over £1 million from a lengthy run in the competition where the club would be able to negotiate their own TV rights and advertising for the games.

Ron Atkinson said “Obviously, I am disappointed that we are not champions and going into the European Cup. That is the glamour competition but in a funny way, the UEFA cup has been regarded as the most difficult because there are more good sides.
