Aston Villa full-back Lucas Digne has appeared to aim a fresh dig at former Everton manager Rafa Benitez when talking about his move to Villa Park. Upon completing his transfer, Digne appeared to take a parting shot at Benitez,
Lucas Digne wrote: “Sometimes it only takes one person from outside to destroy a beautiful love affair.”
In his first six months at the club, the Frenchman made 16 appearances in all competitions for Villa, providing four assists, despite missing three games through injury. Speaking about his reasons behind moving to Villa, Digne now seems to have aimed another dig at his former manager.
Lucas Diane said: “I came to Villa both for the great project of this club and for the manager. Steven Gerrard is a legend in world football. And he is a very inspirational and ambitious manager – a very passionate person. It is important to have the ambition not only to win games but to play positive football, modern football, not destructive stone-age football. It is important for the players, and it is important for the fans. I am in love with football, especially when the football is positive.”
Benitez left Everton just days after the sale of Digne was confirmed. He was replaced by former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard, with the toffees fighting against relegation from the Premier League up until the final weeks of the season.
