Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed three visiting fans have been arrested for ‘discriminatory gestures’ on Sunday following the clash against Burnley. The arrests come after a video on social media went viral allegedly showing a fan making a discriminatory gesture. Spurs said in a statement that the club will support police in the subsequent investigation. Burnley confirmed the arrests occurred in the away end at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The Burnley statement reads: “We can confirm there have been three arrests in the away end today following reports of discrimination. This is now a police investigation and, collectively, we will work with Tottenham Hotspur, Met Police and Lancs Police on this matter.”
An earlier statement from Tottenham
Tottenham Statement read: “The Club can confirm two visiting supporters have been identified and arrested following discriminatory gestures at today’s match. We shall be supporting the police with their investigation.”
The news comes after Spurs managed to edge out the Clarets in a tense game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The match was made that much tougher for the home side, with a number of key players being dealt an illness in the run up to it. That included the likes of Dejan Kulusevski, who was not involved, and captain Hugo Lloris, who managed to brave playing, despite the bout he had to deal with. Harry Kane stepped up and reliably slotted the ball home to take the lead. While Spurs had chances to extend their advantage, they couldn’t, and had to see out a nervous victory come the end. It was a win that boss Antonio Conte believed was “very important”,
Antonio Contw said: “Don’t forget we played two days ago and in a tough game against Arsenal and don’t forget before Arsenal we played in Anfield against Liverpool and you know very well that in this type of game you spend a lot of energy not only in the physical aspect but also a lot mentally aspect. It was very important for us today to take the three points but I think we created the chances to score more goals.”
Spurs now move into fourth in the league, two points ahead of north London rivals Arsenal, who have one game in hand.
