Bruno Lage has tasked Wolverhampton Wanderers’ transfer team with replacing Romain Saiss. Saiss has been offered fresh terms at Molineux after an impressive season under Lage, but the Morocco captain hasn’t been able to agree a new contract. His deal expires at the end of June and, due to a knee inflammation issue, Saiss may have already played his last Wolves game. Asked whether there is any chance of Saiss staying,

Bruno Lage said: “I really don’t know. I know they are talking and the club has offered a proposal. Saiss is very happy in the club and likes working with us. His family likes it here, but in the end they need to find an agreement.”

Lage had already tasked Wolves with signing a new centre-back and Saiss’s exit means chairman Jeff Shi and technical director Scott Sellars may need to find two. Wolves go into next season with Conor Coady, Max Kilman and Willy Boly under contract, along with young defenders Toti Gomes and Yerson Mosquera. On Saiss’ impending departure,

Bruno Lage added: “It’s not about disappointment, but we must understand the season he did and the work he did all season. When we watch him doing a great season; scoring three goals, he is the defender who plays forward more. In the end he hasn’t found an agreement with the club. First we need to understand his role in the club in these six years, then his role with me playing on the left. We need to replace a top player. We are losing a player and now we need to find another one to replace him.”
