Tony Roberts has praised Bruno Lage for making the substitutions which inspired Wolverhampton Wanderers’ thrilling comeback against Chelsea.
Tony Roberts said: “Alex (Silva), Carlos (Cachada) and Jhony (Conceicao) were on the phone to Bruno, who was watching at the training ground. He’s well aware of everything and making the decisions. For him to see it, we’ve put on pace, power and athleticism and it’s got us the goals. Trincao produced a great finish. We see that every day. He just needs to do that more often when he gets those chances to play in the team. Chiquinho just runs at people and you saw the quality from his first-time cross, he’s put it on a plate for Coady. The subs were a massive thing for us to get that point. We had a zoom meeting this morning where he explained the game plan. At half-time he picked out a couple of things and we got the result.”
Wolves are two points behind seventh-placed West Ham with three games to go. The team returns to Molineux next week for a double-header with Manchester City and Norwich before travelling to Liverpool on the final day. Victories over Norwich and one of the title-chasing duo are likely to be required for Wolves to seal Europa Conference League football next season. The late show at Stamford Bridge has given Wolves a glimmer of hope.
Tony Roberts added: “To come here, the home of the European champions and cup finalists, to go two-nil behind was disappointing – we had a mad five minutes – but to come back, it’s unbelievable. But the boys are in there disappointed because we haven’t won it because we created the chances. We’ve been to Man United and Tottenham and won, and we had the same intention coming here. We’ve got a point but we should have had all three. We’ve been going through a bad patch for the last few games, which everybody knows, but we have strength and spirit in the group. You’ve seen that today for them to keep on going to the 96th minute. We need to do that for the next three games because we want to get to Europe.”
