Aston Villa head coach Steven Gerrard insists he has “tonnes of work to do” at Bodymoor Heath amid the club’s longest losing run since November, which cumulated in Dean Smith’s sacking. Villa fell to a bruising 4-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend, as Antonio Conte’s side won 4-0 at Villa Park. A Son Heung-min hat-trick and Dejan Kulusevski’s third goal of the season condemned Gerrard to his 10th Premier League defeat since his appointment five months ago.
Steven Gerrard said: “We are certainly a work in progress. We have tonnes of work to do, you can see in the second half that defensively we have tonnes of work to do and there is certainly a gap between the sides above us right now. In the short-term we have to keep fighting and keep pushing to finish the season in the best position we can and these players need some support and some help. The recruitment is so important moving forward, that’s what we’ll do, but there is a lot of work on the training ground that needs to happen for sure. “We’ve got a lot of work to do defensively for sure with the players I have available from now until the end of the season.” Villa will not be playing Premier League football this weekend, as scheduled opponents Liverpool are due to play Manchester City in an FA Cup semi-final at Wembley.
Gerrard’s men will be back in action on Saturday, April 23, against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium. Eight games remain this campaign and Villa will be looking to get back in form after their break this weekend.
