Leicester City star James Maddison says playing at a World Cup is the “pinnacle” of an Englishman’s footballing career as he provides Gareth Southgate with plenty of food for thought after another brilliant performance. The 25-year-old has scored 13 goals and contributed eight assists across all competitions, including eight and four in the Premier League. His assist for Iheanacho’s goal was his third goal involvement in four top-flight matches, having also scored against Burnley and Brentford. Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Maddison admitted he is pleased with his productivity this season but is focusing more on delivering more regularly.

James Maddison said: “It’s just about showing more consistency and affecting games more. My numbers have always been good, it’s just about finding the consistency. I’m feeling really good, really confident, and I’m going into games with that confidence.”

Asked whether he is playing with the thought of how good form could lead to a spot in the England squad for the 2022 World Cup,

James Maddison responded: “As an English player, the World Cup is the pinnacle. I always think what I can do better to get into the squad. All I can do is keep playing the way I’m playing and keep knocking on the door.”
