Frank Lampard believes Everton finally got the win they deserved against Newcastle United on Thursday evening. The Blues secured a crucial 1-0 victory over the Magpies at Goodison Park thanks to an Alex Iwobi goal deep into added time, latching on to a one-two from Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Frank Lampard said: “The whole evening was a big night for us. Nothing is done, there’s 11 games to go now. We were kind of waiting for this one. A night of togetherness, a night of spirit against a very good team. We got what we deserved, that’s absolutely clear in the end – against some odds, and that exploded throughout the whole stadium and the technical area when we scored. A man down is difficult, at that point it’s if you can hang on. You get one more chance or so to deliver, and the lads did that. The fans rose, the players rose on the pitch and we deserved the win.”

The game was devoid of quality for much of the 90 minutes, with neither side being able to create many clear-cut chances in front of goal. And Lampard admits he understands the frustration of supporters when they see moments like that, but he knows that the players can still give them something to relate to.

Frank Lampard added: “Everyone wants out of this situation. It wasn’t a game of big quality for either side. It was difficult for the players to have calmness and play, things we talk about a lot. I understand frustration, but I felt support. Something that translated in the players. When Anthony Gordon made a tackle in the first half, the stadium erupted. When people show spirit, passion and desire, these players will relate to that.”
