Joelinton admits it would be a ‘dream’ to line up alongside Newcastle United team-mate Bruno Guimaraes for Brazil at the World Cup later this year. The reborn United star has been transformed under Eddie Howe from a struggling number nine to an all-action midfield enforcer.

Joelinton said: “It’s a dream. Every player dreams to play for their country and I’m no different. I know if I do right here I have a chance. I need to keep going, keep my feet on the ground and work for the team. If I do that my time will come.”

Joelinton became the unfortunate punchline to social media jokes following his trouble first two seasons on Tyneside. However, the record signing refused to back down from the challenge and has now become a firm fans’ favourite, and was serenaded with his own chant after scoring in the victory against Brentford last month.

Joelinton added: “To help Newcastle win titles and do great things. I’m happy here, very pleased for the fans. I love the city, my life is good and I hope to stay here for many years.”
