Frank Lampard has lamented the “clear” defensive mistakes that his Everton side made as they were humbled 5-0 away to Tottenham Hotspur. For each of the goals, Lampard believes that his side’s defensive problems were clear to see.
Frank Lampard said: “The main issues tonight were football issues, mistakes and bad defending for the goals. It’s quite clear. It wasn’t just the defensive situations, at the top end of the pitch we didn’t show enough and that was from the early part – even when we were in relative control. Tottenham, the way they play, are very organised. They defend deep and block areas for you. There were big footballing mistakes that cost us, rather than home or away. If you make those footballing mistakes against top offensive players then you’re going to concede.”
Everton had put in a strong display against Man City, but couldn’t have looked more different in Monday night’s defeat. And Lampard believes his squad created their own problems by not stopping the Spurs counter-attack, which they had discussed would be the case.
Frank Lampard added: “I mean, it’s night and day [from Man City]. Really good last week in terms of discipline, gameplan, work ethic. We started the game well today, in the first 15 minutes it looked like I wanted it too. We controlled a lot of the possession. The crucial part of Tottenham’s game as a counter-attacking team was to find spaces in behind you, to involve Harry Kane in the build. The players were very aware of that and didn’t deal with it. After that it’s a long and difficult night. If you’re going to go two or three down here, give them confidence when they’ve not had confidence at home recently, then you make your own problems.”
