Mark Hughes

Crystal Palace 0 – Manchester United 2 Mark of the Champions as the horrors of London end for the Red Devils

Manchester United were the favourites to win the title in 1991-92 season but four points that they dropped in London against QPR and Wimbledon in the last six matches of the campaign meant that Leeds overtook them right at the end and won the title by four points!

Fast forward one year, a wonder strike from Mark Hughes combined with a Paul Ince goal gave Manchester United a comfortable win in London, on the other hand, Villa’s loss at Blackburn meant that only a miracle could continue the 26-year-old wait of the title at Old Trafford. United could actually be champions without even kicking a further ball if Villa failed to beat Oldham a week later. And finally, after months of downplaying his side’s credentials, a wary but excited Alex Ferguson finally admitted that they were close to the crowning glory.

Alex Ferguson said “Tonight I feel excited, very excited. I can’t wait for Blackburn to come along now. They have done us a favour tonight. We must do our own job and not worry about anyone else. I’ve said it all along, complacency won’t get you any points.”

Blackburn 3 – Aston Villa 0 – Mark Newell Shredds Villa’s title hopes to pieces

Ron Atkinson’s title dream was left hanging by the thinnest of threads after a comprehensive thrashing by in form Blackburn. Villa suffered a nightmare at Ewood Park as two goals from Mike Newell and another from the £2.5 million new boy Kevin Gallacher virtually killed off their championship chances. Even though Ron Atkinson refused to concede the title just yet to the club he once managed, Kenny Dalglish, the Blackburn boss admitted that the title was heading to the Old Trafford.

Ron Atkinson said “We’re chasing shadows now. We must not concede just yet, we are not happy with what has happened tonight and we have made things very difficult for us. We must win our last home game against Oldham and hope that United lose the following day against Blackburn.”

Kenny Dalglish said “Villa had had a magnificent season although they will be disappeared because they got so close. But now it does look like that it will be going to Manchester.”

Arsenal 1 Nottingham Forest 1 – Roy Keane gave Forest a glimmer of hope

Roy Keane scored a controversial equalizer four minutes into the injury time to leave Forest clinging on to a faint hope of survival. Arsenal seemed to be coasting to victory on the back of Ian Wright’s goal in the 67th minute but Keane beat the offside trap to shoot past David Seaman to snatch a point for Forest.

It saved Forest from their fourth defeat of the season against Arsenal and meant that they could still beat the drop by winning their last two games against Sheffield United and Ipswich. It was totally an unexpected end to a game that never really caught fire and poured cold water on Arsenal’s lap of honour at the end for the Coca Cola Cup that they won a week earlier.
