Leicester City are yet to contact RB Leipzig over a permanent deal for Ademola Lookman, the German club’s technical director has said. City have Lookman on loan for the season and summer transfer is under consideration, City boss Brendan Rodgers has said. However, that has not seen City reach out to Leipzig for talks over a deal.
Christopher Vivell, who as technical director oversees Leipzig’s transfer policy and philosophy: “We see that he [Lookman] plays again and again, he has good performances. But there is no contact with the loan club.”
Lookman has played 21 times for City since joining the club at the end of the summer window, scoring five goals and setting up three more. He has gradually established himself as a key member of Rodgers’ team, and has been trusted to start on both flanks and up front.
Brendan Rodgers said: “He’s a player I’ve loved working with and he’s improving and developing all of the time. I can see the improvement in his personality. He has everything, he’s quick, he’s two-footed, he presses the game well, he’s a great dribbler, he’s scoring, he’s creating goals. He’s shown he can play anywhere across the frontline, he’s played off the right side, he’s played off the left, he played in a central role. He’s just a fantastic football player who still has so much development to make. I’ve been delighted with his contribution. And moving into the second half of the season, that [a permanent deal] will be something we will sit down and look at.”
Rodgers has also said he feels Lookman needs a permanent home to really take his performance to the next level. City is the fifth club of his professional career, following spells at Charlton, Everton, Leipzig, and Fulham, and he did not reach 50 appearances with any of them.
Brendan Rodgers said: “He’s a boy now in his early 20s that probably needs to find a home. I felt we could bring him in here, where our culture is about coaching and development. We felt we could bring that personality up to the level of his talent. That’s time and work and confidence, and he’s showing he’s developing really well.
