Leicester City’s January business over two windows under Brendan Rodgers has consisted of one loan signing who made just three starts. So it would be ambitious to expect significant changes to the squad this month, but especially given the summer expenditure, which saw City’s highest net spend of recent windows, with no big sales made. Rodgers set out City’s stall pretty early on that front, after his side were eliminated from the Europa League
Brendan Rodgers said: “I’m not sure we have the funds to be honest. It’s one where you just have to make do with what you have.”
But arriving into January with only one of five senior centre-backs available, and none of three senior strikers available, City’s hand has been forced. The window now “takes on a different focus”, Rodgers has said. But with the budget still tight, are loans more likely than permanent transfers? On that,
Brendan Rodger said: “We’ll have to finalise where we are with all of that. If there are loans available that can help us, then that’s maybe something we can look at.”
The club have to decide on a priority position for a loan deal, because it is not like there is one area in which injuries have left them short. It seems strengthening at the back, rather than up top, is at the forefront of Rodgers’ mind.
Brendan Rodgers said: “We’ve had meetings leading up to January but now it takes on a different focus with the injuries we’ve had, and having one fit available centre-half.”
Given the inadequacy of the defence and the form of the attackers, that seems understandable.
