Thomas Tuchel delivered an angry post-match interview as Chelsea were held at home to Brighton in the Premier League on Wednesday evening. Tuchel cut a frustrated figure when assessing his side’s latest result and again expressed his unhappiness regarding player welfare, which comes on the back of his calls for the five substitutions rule to return amid the current schedule.
Thomas Tuchel said: “It’s very frustrating and very disappointing because we gave everything. We had enough big, big chances to decide the match. It was very intense match and we had to make another two changes because of injuries. In the dressing room, they’re completely exhausted. It’s the same subject every single matchday now and we had a horrible decision from the referee: it was a clear penalty, which would have made it 2-0 to us. It was not even checked. Everything against us.”
On Welbeck’s equaliser,
Thomas Tuchel added: “There was no space for him. Two defenders, there was no space.”
Not only did Chelsea lose further ground in the title race, but Tuchel also suffered more possible injuries to his defence. Ben Chilwell and Thiago Silva are already sidelined and their squad is now looking particularly light at the back after this latest double blow. Reece James limped off during the opening 45 minutes of the match while Andreas Christensen made way at half-time, having earlier gone down in the game in discomfort. Discussing the injury of James,
Thomas Tuchel said: “There’s no prognosis: hamstring injury. There’s no need to look ahead against Liverpool. We can try to find players who are ready to play. We have no more wing-backs, we have everybody injured and players coming back from Covid playing, playing and playing. I will always protect my players. First of all, we need to digest this and not talk about the next game.”
