Lucas Digne has confirmed he is fully fit ahead of what will be a crucial 2021/22 season for Everton. The Blues defender took part in the European Championships with France over the summer, but missed what proved to be his side’s decisive game through injury as they were knocked out by Switzerland on penalties in the round of 16. The issue for the left-back initially looked as if it could end his tournament, however hopes quickly arose that he could still play a part for his country if they had managed to reach the latter stages. The 28-year-old has gone on to prove those thoughts right, working hard to make sure he’s played a crucial role in both of Everton’s matches in the USA in the last week.
Lucas Digne said: “I feel very well! I worked very hard during my holidays with my team. I think now, you can see, I’m 100%! I’m behind the team and I give everything for the team.”
The training camp in Florida has provided the defender with his first opportunity to work with Everton manager Rafa Benitez. The France international explained what the squad have been doing differently under their new boss, and what he wants to see from himself and his teammates to make sure they enjoy a successful 2021/22.
Lucas Digne said: “He’s [Benitez] a very good manager, everyone knows him and we have to adapt ourselves to his style. He’s different and every player has to give the best for the team. We are doing a lot of video, a lot of tactic work. I think it’s good for the team. I want to see a strong team through the year, more consistent than the last few years. We have to take care of the details of course and we have to see a winning spirit every game, not some games. I think it will be a great season if we do that.”
Everton rounded off their tour of the United States with a 1-0 victory over Pumas on Wednesday evening thanks to a first half strike from Moise Kean. Conditions were tough for the squad throughout their time in America, but Digne knows that the hard work put in by himself and his teammates will be very beneficial in the near future.
Lucas Digne said: “It was good to finish the week with the victory and we’re working very hard. With the conditions it was not so easy, but I think we have a good spirit and we have to keep like this. It was not easy throughout the week because it was very hot, I think it will be better to be back in England as soon as possible and we can feel the benefit next week. We know we have to work very hard during pre-season, and now we’ve just one more game to prepare for the season well. We have to keep the spirit and keep working hard throughout the week.”
