Aston Villa’s Dwight Yorke had been given the go-ahead to prove that he was not a one-season wonder by Ron Atkinson. He was the top scorer for Villa in the previous year season with 17 goals but had been named substitute six times in seven matches after Dean Saunders’ arrival from Liverpool.
Yorke said “It galls me when people say I’m a one-season wonder and I’ll prove them wrong. I wanted to build on last season. Dalian and Dean have done brilliantly upfront. It’s all a test of character, a side of the profession you have to learn to accept because things will not always go your way”
