Ollie Watkins Aston Villa
England’s preparations for the World Cup have taken a strategic turn as manager Thomas Tuchel considers the deployment of Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins alongside star striker Harry Kane. With the tournament set to be held in the hot and humid climate of North America, Tuchel emphasized the importance of managing player fitness, hinting at potential rotations in the squad.
Thomas Tuchel said: “We will try to keep Harry fit and play him as much as possible this summer but hope we will have the chance to not need to play him every match 90 or 120 minutes.”
Thomas Tuchel further elaborated: “I think Ollie is more the guy maybe to start for Harry if we think Harry should not start a match. To keep the intensity up, to keep the press going. That is the strength of Ollie that he showed for us.”
The World Cup schedule requires England to play eight matches, including warm-up friendlies against New Zealand and Costa Rica. This rigorous itinerary underscores the significance of recalled strikers Watkins and Ivan Toney. Watkins has been in exceptional form for Aston Villa since missing out on the national squad in March, while Toney has been given another chance to prove his worth after a disappointing stint with Al-Ahli.
Thomas Tuchel commented on Toney’s role: “Ivan is kind of a finisher for us, finisher of matches maybe with a special task to take the attention of defenders off Harry and we can play with a second striker. He’s very, very good in the box, very good with set pieces, a good penalty taker, trains on a high level.”
England, having been runners-up in back-to-back European Championships, are among the favorites to win the World Cup. The team has already begun acclimatizing to the challenging conditions expected in North America. Tuchel expressed confidence in Kane’s readiness for the tournament, citing his impressive form and influence during Bayern Munich’s campaign.
Thomas Tuchel stated: “He’s in top shape and ready to go. I think we don’t have to be worried about him at all, even if it is hot and humid.”
As England looks to navigate the challenges of the World Cup, the strategic use of players like Watkins and Toney could be crucial in maintaining the squad’s competitive edge and achieving success on the world stage.
