Lee Clark has been appointed as the manager of Hartlepool United, stepping into the role previously held by Nicky Featherstone. This appointment marks Clark’s return to football in the Northeast, following his managerial stint at Rotherham United FC. The decision has been met with enthusiasm from former Sunderland manager Peter Reid, who believes Clark’s return is beneficial for both the club and the region. Clark, a key figure in Sunderland’s promotion-winning side of the 1998-99 season, is expected to bring his passion and understanding of local football culture to Hartlepool.
Peter Reid said: “I was delighted to see Lee has made it back into the game at Hartlepool. People think we’ve fallen out, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. He was unbelievable for me during his spell at Sunderland. Fans will quickly see his passion. He lives in the area and understands the fans demand which will help him too.”
Peter Reid added: “I was totally devastated when I had to move him on at Sunderland. I sold him to my pal Paul Bracewell at Fulham and he couldn’t believe his luck to get Lee. He did brilliantly during his managerial spell at Huddersfield Town and their fans will tell you he gave them some amazing times and memories. He has some history at Pools, with his brother-in-law Paul Baker being a huge influence as captain and winner in the 90-91 promotion.”
Peter Reid continued: “He has done a top job with his son Bobby, who I’ve seen play a fair bit, and he is a real talent with a superb loan season just behind him at Derby County. Lee has done terrific work with his boy and he has been much in demand. It would be just brilliant to see Hartlepool back in the league with their new owner. From my time in the area, the fans really backed them in numbers.”
Clark’s football career has been extensive, having played for Newcastle, Sunderland, and Fulham. His managerial experience spans across clubs such as Blackpool, Kilmarnock, Bury, and Blyth Spartans, with international spells in Sudan and Oman. At Hartlepool, former captain Gary Liddle will continue as part of the first-team coaching staff, while Chris Beech has been appointed head of recruitment. Peter Reid, a former England international and ex-manager of the year, remains a revered figure among Sunderland fans for his transformative impact on the club. Reid is set to celebrate his 70th birthday next month at a special event at the Roker Hotel in Sunderland.
