Xabi Alonso
The former Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid coach, Xabi Alonso, has signed a four-year contract with Chelsea, set to commence on July 1. In a notable shift within BlueCo’s hierarchy, Alonso has been appointed as ‘manager’ rather than ‘head coach’, indicating a change in power dynamics at Stamford Bridge. As the club prepares for an active summer transfer window, Alonso is particularly eager to work with Andrey Santos, a promising talent who joined the Blues from Vasco da Gama for an initial £13 million in January 2023.
Andrey Santos said: “Xabi [Alonso] is a top manager and is a legend in football. He played in my position too, so I have to work hard. It’s special for me because it was my first goal in the Premier League and it came in my first game against Spurs. I’m so happy because we won this game, and now we have to move on to the last game.”
Andrey Santos continued: “The chance to qualify for Europe is still there. I know it’s a little bit hard, but we have to do our job. There is one game left, and we have to work hard this week to win it. I’m so happy with this performance. I even looked at my phone after the game, and my wife had sent me a message saying, ‘Wow, what’s happened with you today?’ I said, ‘I don’t know, but I’m so happy, and I want that to happen more times!”
Andrey Santos admitted: “I think this club opened the door to Europe for me. I joined Chelsea when I was 18 years old, and it’s changed my life. I was playing in Brazil’s second division, and moving to the Premier League is not easy.”
Andrey Santos added: “And then I joined Nottingham Forest and Strasbourg as well, but now I’m back and I’m so happy to be here – my family too. My second son is English, so I’m so happy because it’s like a dream for my family and me to play here at Chelsea.”
Alonso’s appointment as manager signifies Chelsea’s intent to reinforce their squad and strategy under a leadership style that blends experience and tactical acumen. Santos’ comments reflect his admiration for Alonso and his determination to thrive under the new managerial regime. Despite past challenges, including a brief and unremarkable loan spell at Nottingham Forest, Santos remains optimistic about his future at Chelsea. His journey from Brazil’s second division to the Premier League underscores his resilience and ambition.
As Chelsea gears up for their final game of the season, the focus remains on securing a spot in European competitions. The club’s strategic changes and Santos’ personal milestones are pivotal as they aim to finish the season on a high note, with the young midfielder eager to contribute under Alonso’s guidance.
