Leeds United’s Premier League campaign reached a pivotal moment as they secured their top-flight status, thanks to a dramatic turn of events in a recent match involving Arsenal and Newcastle United. The Leeds squad, en route to their own clash with Tottenham Hotspur, witnessed the tense final moments of the Arsenal game, which saw a crucial VAR decision ultimately favoring their survival. This significant achievement was celebrated by the Leeds players, who were in high spirits as they prepared for their own match.
Ethan Ampadu said: “It was very good in the moment. We were flying so we were waiting to see the result when we landed and we caught the last 20 minutes on the coach together. We celebrated on the coach, it’s a massive achievement for this club. It’s what our aim was at the start of the season. I think moments like that you have to celebrate. It’s a very big moment for this club, to stay in the Premier League.”
Ethan Ampadu added: “It’s a bit weird because you want to do it on the back of your own result. It was a relaxed mood at dinner last night. Good mood, good vibes. But then, from this morning, it was focus on this game. No matter if we were safe or not, we wanted to play this game as we have the whole season. We want to wear the shirt with pride and put in our best performances. So it was all work mode. We had to get through today and put on a proper performance to get a result. I think maybe now we can have a couple of days to enjoy it and understand how big it is for the club and the fans, you could see them at the end. It’s very special.”
The Leeds players’ celebrations were short-lived as the focus quickly shifted to their own performance against Tottenham Hotspur. Despite the relief of securing their league status, Ampadu emphasized the importance of maintaining professionalism and delivering a strong performance. The team aimed to conclude their season with pride and dedication, reflecting the ethos that has driven them throughout the campaign.
Ampadu also addressed a personal incident during the match against Tottenham, where he sustained a noticeable bruise on his forehead following a collision with Mathys Tel. Despite the injury appearing severe, Ampadu downplayed its impact, focusing instead on the team’s collective achievement and the support from their fans.
The Leeds United squad’s ability to secure their Premier League status is a testament to their resilience and determination throughout a challenging season. As they look forward to a brief period of celebration, the players remain committed to building on this success in the upcoming season.
