Sunderland’s head coach, Régis Le Bris, is preparing for a crucial defensive reshuffle following the FA’s decision to reject Dan Ballard’s appeal against his red card for violent conduct. This ruling means Ballard will miss the final three games of the season, forcing Le Bris to reconsider his defensive lineup. The coach faces a decision on whether to move Nordi Mukiele infield and appoint a new right-back or potentially recall seasoned player Luke O’Nien.
Régis Le Bris said: “The main idea is that we want to win this game so it’s a short-term vision [with selection], this is really clear. If it’s a 50-50, maybe 1% will influence the decision but in this case, I don’t think it would be the idea. Lutsha is a player of Sunderland and we’ll see at the end of the season if we go further or not. He’s 100% with us [at this point]. It’s an opportunity [for him] of course because we have different options this season. He’s versatile, a bit like Trai, so it’s really useful for the manager, for the coaching staff, for the team because when we need someone ready to play as a midfielder, left-side centre-back, right-back, he can manage different positions and he did well.”
Regis Le Bris added: “As with Bertrand Traoré, whose contract expires this summer but with whom the club have the option to extend for a further campaign, talks are set to be held at the end of the campaign to reach a decision. We all have to be aligned otherwise we can’t move forward. So the conversation is always open between Flo, the player, and the agent and I’m in the loop as well because I make the choice every weekend. And for the future, we have many conversations with Flo about how we want to build the squad and what could be the opportunities in the market as well. So it’s dynamic and I think the most important thing is to be honest and clear with the player.”
Lutsharel Geertruida’s future at Sunderland remains uncertain, as he has struggled for game time since his last start in the Tyne-Wear derby win in March. This has led to speculation about whether the club will activate their option to sign him permanently from RB Leipzig for a reported £17 million. Despite this uncertainty, Le Bris emphasized that Geertruida’s versatility could be crucial in the upcoming matches, as he can play in multiple positions, providing valuable flexibility to the squad.
As Sunderland approaches the final stretch of the season, the focus remains on immediate performance and securing positive results. The club is also set to engage in discussions with players like Bertrand Traoré, whose contract situation is similar to Geertruida’s, to align future plans and squad development strategies.
