Tommy Doyle has announced his departure from Birmingham City following a season-long loan spell from Wolverhampton Wanderers. The midfielder, who played 38 Championship games, is set to return to his parent club, Wolves, where he has two years remaining on his contract. Despite a challenging season at St Andrew’s, Doyle expressed gratitude to the club and its fans through a heartfelt social media message.
Tommy Doyle said: “Thank you @BCFC for everything this season. I’ve loved wearing the shirt & playing for you all.”
During his time at Birmingham City, Doyle faced competition in the midfield, particularly after manager Chris Davies opted for a more direct style of play, favoring players like Jhon Solis, Paik Seung-ho, and Tomoki Iwata. Despite limited starts, Doyle contributed four assists and showcased his set-piece delivery skills. Reflecting on his season, Doyle acknowledged the challenges but remained positive about his overall contribution.
Chris Davies said: “Tommy would probably say that he would have liked to have played more minutes than he has, but he’s definitely been an important player for us and in my eyes a core player around the squad. He’s still got a big role to play and he’s a good character.”
Doyle’s return to Wolves marks a new chapter as he looks to secure a more prominent role. Having joined Wolves permanently in 2024, following a loan from Manchester City, Doyle’s contract includes a buy-back option and a reported 50% sell-on clause for City. As he transitions back to Molineux, Doyle’s technical abilities and forward-thinking approach will be assets as he seeks to make an impact in the Premier League.
