Nottingham Forest have experienced a rollercoaster season, marked by managerial changes and a flirtation with relegation. Yet, they now find themselves on the cusp of European success, with a Europa League final within reach and a potential Champions League qualification on the horizon. Their recent 3-1 victory over Chelsea has bolstered their Premier League survival hopes, extending their unbeaten run to ten games. As they prepare to face Aston Villa, former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan has commended owner Evangelos Marinakis for his role in the club’s resurgence.
Simon Jordan said: “Marinakis deserves it. Irrespective of the fact that he doesn’t provide a conventional approach to things and people will look at the Espirito Santo situation and think that was poorly handled – and look at the circumstances surrounding how much money he spent from the outset when they came in the Premier League and all this. They’ve made a Horlicks of it and got themselves into a situation they should never have been in. If they get out of it, all will be forgotten. It doesn’t really matter if Nottingham Forest finish 17th or 16th or 15th. It really matters if they win the Europa League. To some extent as long as they’re in the Premier League, building and with a European trophy, Marinakis is golden. All the mistakes that he made, all the choices that he made, whether it was Postecoglou, a vanity play, Sean Dyche didn’t work out because the players were giving him their two penneth, no matter how he gets there, it’s the ends that ultimately justifies the means. You created chaos and you found a solution to it. So you created a self-fulfilling prophecy and then redefined it. You got lucky getting in the Europa League in the first place, let’s have it right, you’re in there by default because of Palace’s bad administration. You’ve sort of weathered storms, you made a terrible decision with Postecoglou, he was part of a situation at Forest which was a disaster, and one way or another, you’ve muddled your way through. At least he tries to do something, at least he pushes the envelope. Palace are going to win the European Conference League, but they didn’t push the envelope. He pushes it, he tries and makes things happen. He says what he’s going to do, he spends a lot of money, he backs it up, he fights with the authorities. Will Pereira be in situ in a year’s time? Probably not, but it doesn’t matter.”
Jordan also reflected on the performance of head coach Vítor Pereira, acknowledging his achievements while noting the challenges ahead.
Simon Jordan said “I think Forest are safe, but they shouldn’t approach it in that way,” Jordan said. “They’ve got Newcastle that have just won a game for a change and will want to finish the season strongly. They’ve got Man United away where [Michael] Carrick is auditioning and seemingly in a starring role every time he turns up and at Old Trafford – and you’ve got Bournemouth, and who wants to play Bournemouth on the last game of the season? “So it’s good that they’ve got the amount of points that they’ve got and well deserved. Can he do it when it’s actually a fresh start with a new set of players that are ultimately being recruited by him with a new expectation for a season in front of him. But what he has done, he’s done really well. They played against a very poor Sunderland side and dispatched them brutally. They did what I thought they might do last week against Villa, and Villa will be in the game on Thursday to stay in the Europa League, and they’ve got a great result against a Chelsea side that just doesn’t know whether they’re Arthur or Martha at the moment.”
Despite the challenges faced throughout the season, Nottingham Forest’s recent form and strategic decisions by Marinakis and Pereira have positioned them for potential European success. As they prepare for their upcoming fixtures, the team’s resilience and strategic maneuvers will be crucial in determining their final standing in both domestic and European competitions.
