In a remarkable display of solidarity and remembrance, Sunderland supporters Jacob and Joseph Hay, alongside their friend Josh Ritchie, are preparing for a challenging 170-mile run. The journey, starting at the Stadium of Light and concluding at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium, is dedicated to the memory of Bradley Lowery, a young Sunderland fan whose courageous battle with neuroblastoma touched the hearts of football fans worldwide.
Jacob Hay said: “Last year my brother, Joseph, ran from the Stadium of Light to Hillsborough for the game against Sheffield Wednesday. Myself and Josh were really inspired by what he did and we decided we wanted to do something together to raise money in Bradley’s memory.”
Jacob Hay continued: “I’ve done a few half-marathon distances in training but I’ve never ran 30 miles before. I’m expecting this to be the hardest challenge of my life, but I will just think about Bradley and the Foundation.”
Jacob Hay added: “Bradley showed incredible courage and brought people together in a way football rarely does. That connection between two football clubs, two sets of supporters, and one remarkable young lad is why we have chosen to raise funds for the Bradley Lowery Foundation, continuing the incredible work they do to support families when they need it most.”
The run is scheduled for May 17, coinciding with what would have been Bradley Lowery’s 15th birthday. Tragically, Bradley passed away at the age of six due to neuroblastoma, a rare form of childhood cancer. His story and spirit have continued to inspire many, leading to the establishment of the Bradley Lowery Foundation, which supports families affected by childhood cancer.
The trio’s initiative has already garnered significant support, with a JustGiving page set up for the event raising £742 so far. They have set a target of £3,000, aiming to contribute to the foundation’s ongoing efforts in assisting families during challenging times.
This endeavor not only commemorates Bradley’s legacy but also highlights the unifying power of football, bringing together fans from different clubs in a shared cause. The run serves as a testament to the enduring impact of Bradley Lowery and the community’s commitment to supporting those in need.
