Aston Villa is entering a pivotal phase of their season under manager Unai Emery, with the team facing significant challenges both domestically and in European competitions. As the team prepares for an important Europa League fixture, concerns have been raised about their recent performance against Fulham, where they appeared to have one eye on their upcoming European match.
John Townley said: “Yeah, spot on. I think I said that yesterday. I think that summarises my feelings after the game as well. I asked a few different questions. One of them was, did we have our minds on Thursday a little bit? I think it’s only normal for that to be the case. But at the same time, it wasn’t a game where Fulham battered us or we were by far the second best team on the pitch. I thought it was a relatively balanced game.”
John Townley continued: “I don’t think we did enough to win it, but in the same way, how many times have we spoken over the course of a season – or even since Emery joined – that in the Premier League, if you’re going to win enough games away from home to supplement your home form and get top four or top five, you’re not going to win all those away games playing a certain brand of football that looks great. It’s just not the case.”
John Townley added: “I think Fulham will feel like they did enough to win the game. But at the same time, if that’s a draw, I don’t think anyone’s saying we played terribly. It’s very forgettable if it’s 0–0. And football is about fine margins. Again, if Rogers scores that goal or Watkins scores his goal – and both of those would have been excellent goals – the game changes massively.”
Villa’s recent form has been a topic of discussion, with some questioning the quality of football being played despite the positive results. The team’s structure and consistency have been highlighted as key factors in their current standing, though there is an acknowledgment that opening up their style of play could lead to more defensive vulnerabilities.
John Townley remarked: “The best team in the league doesn’t always play good football and that trickles down. It’s about moments, set pieces, fine margins. It’s not a particularly pretty watch. But that’s the structure we’ve built. We can’t suddenly change that because we want to play better football.”
As Villa prepares for their Europa League clash, the focus is on maintaining momentum and managing the occasion effectively. The team is considered stronger than their upcoming opponents, but the challenge lies in demonstrating that superiority on the pitch.
John Townley expressed: “Momentum is a big part of football, absolutely. But I’m confident we can go there and get something. It’s about managing the occasion. We are a better team than Forest – but we have to show it. That’s what big teams do.”
Looking ahead, the future of players like Bogarde is also under scrutiny. While he is recognized as a talented player, his role within the team remains uncertain due to the depth of Villa’s midfield options.
John Townley commented: “I’m quite balanced with this one in the sense that I do think Bogarde is a good player. For example, we have one of the best holding midfielders in the world injured at the moment, and Bogarde still can’t step in when is out. It’s not really a conversation, like he needs to be playing regularly now.”
As Aston Villa navigates this crucial period, the emphasis is on achieving success in both domestic and European competitions, with the team aiming to capitalize on their strong position and deliver memorable performances.
