Roberto De Zerbi
Roberto De Zerbi is set to make his managerial debut for Tottenham Hotspur this Sunday against Sunderland, as the North London club seeks its first Premier League victory of the 2026 season. The 46-year-old Italian manager will address the media on Friday afternoon, marking his first press conference since taking charge. De Zerbi’s primary focus is on securing Tottenham’s Premier League status with just seven matches remaining in the campaign.
Roberto De Zerbi said: “I think it is not the right moment to speak about my philosophy for football. I am here now at the end of the season because we have to win the games. In football, the style of play and the tactical disposition are important. There is a mentality and I would like to help the player to reach the best mentality we can show.”
Roberto De Zerbi continued: “I signed five years of contract because for me it is a big challenge and I will be the coach of Tottenham next season, no matter what. I love keeping the ball, I love possession, I love to create chances to score. But at the same time, I love having 11 defenders when we don’t have the ball, because in this time of football, we have to attack with 11 players, with the goalkeeper as well. We have to defend with 11 players when the ball is not for us.”
De Zerbi’s appointment has not been without controversy. His previous defense of Mason Greenwood during their time at Marseille has led to backlash from several Spurs fan groups, who have voiced their disapproval. De Zerbi addressed this issue in a recent interview, expressing regret if his comments were offensive and emphasizing his sensitivity to issues of violence.
Roberto De Zerbi stated: “I have never wanted to downplay the issue of violence against women or violence against anyone more broadly. I am sorry if I offended anyone’s feeling with this subject matter – I have a daughter and I’m very sensitive to these things, and I always have been.”
In addition to addressing these off-field issues, De Zerbi will also be questioned about the progress of key players such as Mohammed Kudus, who has suffered a setback in his recovery from a quad tendon injury. The potential need for surgery could sideline the Ghanaian star for the remainder of the season and the upcoming World Cup. Furthermore, updates on goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario’s recovery from hernia surgery, as well as the fitness of Bentancur and Maddison, are anticipated.
De Zerbi’s backroom staff announcement also raised eyebrows, with only two of his usual team members joining him at Spurs. The Italian manager will likely be asked about the potential for further additions to his coaching team in the summer.
With a five-year contract in hand, De Zerbi faces the immediate challenge of steering Tottenham away from relegation. His tactical approach, focusing on possession and defensive solidity, will be put to the test as he seeks to make an impact in the Premier League.
