Scott Parker Fulham
Burnley manager Scott Parker addressed the media ahead of his team’s return to Premier League action against Brighton. Following a three-week hiatus, Parker discussed the challenges and opportunities presented by the extended break, as well as the preparations for the upcoming match at Turf Moor.
Scott Parker said: “It’s been a long period, probably the longest that I’ve ever experienced, so obviously down to the fixtures and how they fell as well. We had some downtime, gave some players some downtime certainly after the Fulham game just to recuperate, just for many reasons, physically and mentally as well. And then since then we’ve worked pretty tough mate, to be fair, over the last couple of weeks we’ve worked pretty tough in terms of keeping up with where we need to keep up with and obviously working on things.”
Parker elaborated on the balance between rest and preparation during the break, emphasizing the importance of a mental reset for both players and staff.
Scott Parker said: “I think there’s probably been a balance really. From my side there’s been elements which I think has been hugely important for us and needed definitely, like I said, and the main being that probably just to refresh a little bit and just take the players away from this pressure cooker that everyone’s in and I think that’s probably helped. On the flip side, obviously just making sure the balance of work in terms of making sure players are still right out there and I think we’ve taken that balance really well and obviously now we’re going into the weekend really.”
Reflecting on the break’s personal impact, Parker acknowledged the initial challenges of stepping away but recognized the benefits of doing so.
Scott Parker said: “I’ve tried to do that [switch off]. Certainly early on in the break there were some challenges there in that sense where you want to be amongst it still, you want to try and help, you want to be amongst the group and you’re feeling like you’re missing days in such an important part. But at the same time, on reflection, looking back, I think it’s also probably been good for me, along with everyone at the club.”
As Burnley prepares to face Brighton, Parker praised the opposition’s consistency and quality, acknowledging the need for his team to be fully prepared.
Scott Parker said: “They’re a very good team. I think firstly a football club that has got clear direction, you see that in terms of the players they recruit, they’re very much similar. Managers they recruit, very, very similar and I think the style of play is, whether it’s one manager or the last manager or the one before that, their way of playing is very, very consistent.”
Despite a poor performance in their previous encounter with Brighton, Parker dismissed any lingering effects on this weekend’s match, focusing instead on managing expectations and the importance of performance.
Scott Parker said: “Not really, no. It’s not personal to that. Brighton was a game where we were second best for a lot of it and we didn’t leave anything on them in any sense and probably never felt that they were in a game. So we definitely can’t have that performance at the weekend.”
Parker concluded by emphasizing the need for his team to adopt a winning mentality and show more aggression in the final stretch of the season.
Scott Parker said: “I’ve questioned that two or three times this year, where I felt we lacked a little bit of fight for large parts this year. I think we’d give every bit of that, really. Of course, like anything, every intention in the world, every team that I’d want us to be is this aggressive front-footed team.”
Burnley will aim to capitalize on their preparation and mental refresh as they face Brighton, seeking a positive result to boost their Premier League campaign.
