Kalvin Phillips
Kalvin Phillips, who joined Sheffield United on loan from Manchester City, has faced a challenging season that has left his future uncertain. Initially brought in to alleviate Rodri’s workload at City, Phillips struggled to meet Pep Guardiola’s expectations and found himself sidelined. His move to Sheffield United was seen as a chance to rejuvenate his career, but a series of unfortunate events has cast doubt on his ability to secure a long-term role with the club.
Blow said: “Everyone had this idea in their head of how good Kalvin Phillips can be. It felt like this could be the move that reignites his career and kind of pushes Sheffield United up the table too. There was scepticism around the fact that he hasn’t really done anything for quite a few years now and I think that’s kind of shown in how the loan’s gone. It’s not gone to plan. It has been a bit of a disaster really.”
Blow added: “United do have options in central midfield. It was always going to be one of those where if you lose your place, you might not get it back. I think he has to regain his spot now and play because if it doesn’t work out, that will be three unsuccessful loan spells and then where does he go from there? Going into the Championship was already a decent step down for him. Does he then drop into League One or move abroad? You do feel like he needs to show something in these last seven games of the season. Chris Wilder might want to give him another chance and there is a Leeds contingent at Sheffield United – Patrick Bamford, Jamie Shackleton – who could convince the club to re-sign him. But he needs to prove himself if he wants to be given a new contract here.”
Phillips’ time at Sheffield United has been marred by a red card incident against Sheffield Wednesday, which resulted in a three-match ban. During this suspension, he sustained an injury that has kept him out of action even after serving his ban. Despite Sheffield United’s victory in the match where Phillips was sent off, his absence has been felt, and his return to the squad remains uncertain.
With two years left on his Manchester City contract, Phillips faces an uphill battle to prove his worth. The possibility of a cut-price exit or another loan move looms, as any hopes of recouping significant transfer fees have diminished. The final seven games of the season are crucial for Phillips to demonstrate his capabilities and secure a future, either at Sheffield United or elsewhere.
