Unai Emery
Aston Villa are in a strong position to achieve a historic double this season, challenging for Champions League qualification through both the Premier League and the Europa League. Under the guidance of Unai Emery, Villa are currently fourth in the Premier League table and have reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League. With seven league matches remaining, including crucial fixtures against Liverpool and Manchester City, the team is poised for a significant achievement.
Gareth Barry said: “Fourth. I had a look at the fixtures and if they can get between 10 and 12 points, that will definitely guarantee them fifth and possibly get them fourth. The Liverpool game at home could be a pivotal point in terms of finishing above them. But there’s no easy game, but the fixtures are there for Villa to qualify. They have a five-point cushion over Liverpool in fifth and are six points ahead of sixth-place Chelsea. After a campaign of ups and downs, Barry says Villa need to rediscover some positive momentum. If you can get that momentum and confidence into your team in the final games then it goes a long way. There’s players in the dressing room that have got over the line in the Champions League. They’ve done it a couple years ago, so they’ve got experience of doing it. They’ve got a good spine and an experienced manager so they’ve got a strong chance.”
Barry, a former member of the Martin O’Neill team that narrowly missed out on Champions League qualification nearly two decades ago, is optimistic about Villa’s current prospects. He believes the team has the potential to secure a top-four finish, provided they maintain their current form and capitalize on key fixtures. The upcoming home game against Liverpool is seen as particularly crucial in determining their final league position.
In addition to their league ambitions, Barry is confident that Villa can triumph in the Europa League, which would be the club’s first major trophy win since the Coca Cola Cup in 1996. He emphasized the strength and depth of the squad, noting their status as favorites for the competition.
Gareth Barry said: “It’s on the day, isn’t it really? But they’ve got a strong squad and they’re favourites for a reason. It would be lovely to end that run of years of no trophy for Aston Villa and when you win that first trophy, why not go and win three or four after?”
As Villa approach the final stretch of the season, the team is focused on building momentum and confidence. With experienced players and a seasoned manager at the helm, they are well-equipped to make this a truly memorable season for the club and its supporters.
