Leeds United
Leeds United faced financial constraints during the summer transfer window, having reached their spending limits. The club’s only acquisition was loanee Facundo Buonanotte. With the introduction of new ‘Squad Cost Ratio’ rules, Leeds United will be allowed to spend up to 85% of their revenue on players and the manager, provided they remain in the Premier League. Despite voting against the new structure, which was passed by a narrow margin in November, the club is now focused on managing its finances effectively.
Lowy said: “We should be fine. Part of the job of the executives running the club is to be able to project out where the PSR issues are, how we can buy players, how we set payments for players over the period, and how long the contracts should be. As [chairman] Paraag Marathe said, we will maximise the position that we can do to the best on the pitch but part of that is our ability to manage it. I am highly confident that we can manage that properly.”
Lowy added: “The way I’d answer that is, you always need to be working and managing the PSR on both sides of the fence, both buying and selling. If you look at where the club is, it’s too early to talk about next year and whether we stay up or not. But there are changes in a squad every year. I can assure you we are in a position where we know how to manage it. While PSR is an issue and something you have to manage around, there are many ways you can manoeuvre and manage that squad. We are in a position at the moment where we are building on that [squad] core. There’s always investment, and there will definitely be more.”
The new financial regulations, which Leeds United initially opposed, require clubs to maintain a balance between spending and revenue. Leeds United’s board member, Lowy, expressed confidence in the club’s ability to navigate these challenges. The club is committed to maintaining its financial health while ensuring competitive performance on the pitch. The focus remains on strategic player acquisitions and contract management to optimize the club’s position under the new rules. With careful planning and execution, Leeds United aims to strengthen its squad and secure its place in the Premier League.
