The Premier League title holders experienced their ninth defeat of the season, conceding a goal for the seventh time in added time. Andre Trindade’s deflected effort secured the victory after Mohamed Salah had equalized Rodrigo Gomes’s opener. The two teams are set to face off again in the Black Country later this week for a spot in the Cup’s quarter-finals, with Rob Edwards expecting Arne Slot’s men to be seeking revenge.
Rob Edwards said: “It’s not great for my heart, I don’t think, but I could get used to it, it’s a really good feeling. At nil-nil at half time, that’s where we wanted to be, we’d have loved to have been winning, but it was where we wanted. We have been growing generally in the second half of games anyway, put more pressure on them and they open up and that was how it went. We’ve probably made them quite angry now! But no, we just have to take it one at a time and we did say before the Aston Villa game (on Friday night) that we want to try and win every game, we know how hard it is to do that. You see how good Liverpool are and we had to ride our luck at times. Things went for us tonight. Does it have to be one or the other? We want to win both. It’s Liverpool, you’ve seen how good they are, they were champions last year, you’ve got to savour these moments and yeah, I lost myself a bit there [celebrating late on], a 93rd-minute winner, we have to relish these moments.”
Edwards continued: “It’s lovely, long may the celebrations carry on. It’s the groin this time! It’s Liverpool Football Club and any time you beat them, you’ve got to savour the moment. Never mind the position we are in at the moment. They’re a fantastic football club with an incredible manager and loads of excellent players. We’re trying to turn things around.”
The match was a testament to the resilience and strategic growth of Edwards’ team, particularly in the second half. Despite Liverpool’s formidable reputation and recent championship status, Edwards’ side managed to capitalize on their chances, demonstrating their ability to compete at the highest level. The upcoming Cup quarter-final clash promises to be an intense encounter, as both teams aim to secure their place in the next round. Edwards’ comments reflect a blend of respect for Liverpool’s prowess and confidence in his team’s potential to continue their successful run. The anticipation for the rematch is high, with both sides eager to prove their mettle on the field.
