Cole Palmer
Cole Palmer, the 23-year-old footballer from Wythenshawe, has been making waves at Chelsea since his transfer from Manchester City in 2023. Despite his successful stint at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior has dismissed any rumors about Palmer being unsettled at the club. However, if circumstances were to change, former Manchester United player Lee Sharpe believes Palmer could potentially shine at Old Trafford. Yet, Sharpe also noted that Palmer’s chances of breaking into the United first team are slim as long as Bruno Fernandes remains with the club.
Lee Sharpe said: “I’ve seen the rumours about Cole Palmer returning to Manchester United, that he’s a boyhood fan of the club. Maybe if Bruno Fernandes leaves Old Trafford, then Palmer could be an option to replace him, but if he stays then I don’t see how Palmer gets into the team.”
As it stands, Bruno Fernandes’s current contract with Manchester United is set to expire next summer, although there is an option to extend it by another year. Fernandes is expected to discuss his future with his agent only after the upcoming World Cup in North America. Meanwhile, Manchester United has yet to finalize a new deal for Fernandes, primarily because they are still in the process of appointing a permanent manager. Regardless of Fernandes’s decision, United is advised to strengthen their midfield this summer. With Casemiro set to leave Old Trafford upon the expiration of his contract, the club faces a shortage of depth beyond the Brazilian, Kobbie Mainoo, and Manuel Ugarte, who has struggled to adapt to the Premier League.
In a related development, Omar Berrada, Manchester United’s Chief Operating Officer, has indicated that the club’s transfer activities are far from over, emphasizing a ‘football-first approach’. Berrada highlighted the club’s commitment to investing in both the men’s and women’s teams, pointing out their current standings in their respective leagues and competitions.
Omar Berrada said: “We continue to take a football-first approach and invest in both our men’s and women’s first teams. On the pitch, our men’s team sits 4th in the Premier League and our women’s team are 2nd in the Women’s Super League, as well as reaching the League Cup Final and the quarter-final of the UEFA Women’s Champions League. Today’s results demonstrate the underlying strength of our business as we continue to push for the best football results possible for our Men’s and Women’s teams.”
The question remains whether Manchester United’s investment strategy will extend to covering the hefty £100 million price tags associated with players like Wharton, Baleba, and Anderson. As the club continues to navigate the complexities of the transfer market, fans and analysts alike are keenly observing how these decisions will shape the future of Manchester United’s squad.
