VAR NO GOAL

In a dramatic North London derby, Tottenham Hotspur’s Randal Kolo Muani had his equalizing goal disallowed during their clash with Arsenal. The incident unfolded when Kolo Muani latched onto a deflected cross from Conor Gallagher, only to be penalized for allegedly fouling Arsenal’s Gabriel Magalhaes. The Brazilian defender, with both feet on the ground, was lightly prodded in the back by Kolo Muani, prompting Gabriel to theatrically fall to the ground. Referee Peter Bankes awarded a free-kick to Arsenal, a decision later confirmed by Video Assistant Referee Darren England and his assistant Timothy Wood.
Hackett said: “What the referee has to decide is whether the Arsenal player is backing in. What makes it so stupid in this situation is that we see grappling going unpunished, but something as soft as this is punished. No wonder spectators are confused by the quality of these decisions. Here, we have a straight arm, and the player is using a degree of balance while maintaining space.”
Dermot Gallagher said: “The referee gives it. The on-field decision is always going to stand, he thinks there is enough of a push. VAR is never going to say he’s got it wrong as the evidence is there.”
Jay Bothroyd said: “I thought it was really soft. When you look at the trajectory of the ball, Gabriel is underneath the ball, and he realises he is in that position. It is not enough to react in the way he did. He has fooled the referee.”
The decision has sparked significant debate, particularly as a similar incident involving Hugo Ekitike and Cristian Romero earlier in the season went unpunished. The ruling could have far-reaching implications, with Arsenal aiming for the Premier League title and Tottenham battling to avoid relegation. Mikel Arteta’s side capitalized on the decision, maintaining their lead at the top of the league, while Tottenham continues to struggle in the lower half of the table.
The incident underscores ongoing concerns about the consistency of officiating in the Premier League, particularly with the use of VAR. As Tottenham’s season unfolds, fans can expect more drama, with Frank’s tenure in North London already proving eventful. From selection dilemmas to VAR controversies, the club’s journey this season promises to be filled with talking points.
