Roy Keane Manchester United
Roy Keane, the former Manchester United midfielder, has voiced his strong support for Diego Simeone as a potential candidate to take over the managerial role at Old Trafford. With Michael Carrick currently serving as interim manager, Keane believes Simeone could bring “good havoc” to the club, despite Carrick’s recent contract extension positioning him as a strong contender to remain in charge.
Roy Keane said: “I’ve said it for years, I’d like to see Atletico Madrid’s Simeone, I’d like to see him go in there. I know his mate’s [Andrea Berta, sporting director] gone to Arsenal, but I think he would just create havoc, but good havoc. This idea that he’s defensive… Yeah, he doesn’t like his team giving up too many goals or chances, but they can play a bit.”
Andy Townsend said: “I think you have to be looking for an elite manager, someone that has dealt with the very biggest players and personalities and has handled pressure from above and the terraces. I don’t think Antonio Conte would be the right fit. Out of all of them, the one manager I would like to see at United is Diego Simeone.”
The debate over Manchester United’s managerial future continues to heat up, with other high-profile names such as Carlo Ancelotti, Luis Enrique, and Julian Nagelsmann also being considered. However, Simeone’s name remains prominently in the mix, with Keane and Townsend both advocating for his appointment. They argue that Simeone’s style, characterized by discipline and a fighting spirit, aligns well with the demands of the Premier League, even if it might not fully satisfy United fans’ desire for flamboyant football.
Despite the support for Simeone, Michael Carrick has been making a case for himself to stay beyond his interim role. His recent success, including a five-game unbeaten streak, has been achieved through maintaining a consistent starting lineup and extracting solid performances from his players. This understated yet effective approach has not gone unnoticed, even as the conversation around a permanent manager continues.
Meanwhile, Simeone’s Atletico Madrid has experienced mixed results recently, including a significant 4-0 Copa del Rey semi-final victory over Barcelona, but also suffering losses to Real Betis and Rayo Vallecano. These outcomes have left Atletico trailing behind La Liga leaders Real Madrid by 15 points. Despite these challenges, Simeone’s reputation as a manager who can handle pressure and deliver results remains intact, making him an attractive option for Manchester United.
