Chelsea and West Ham United have both been charged by The Football Association (FA) following an incident during their Premier League match on Saturday. The match, which saw Chelsea secure a dramatic 3-2 victory, ended in chaos as a brawl erupted in stoppage time. West Ham’s Jean-Clair Todibo received a straight red card for violent conduct after grabbing Chelsea’s Joao Pedro by the neck, following a VAR review.
Anthony Taylor said: “After review, West Ham number 25 grabs Chelsea number 20 round the throat in a violent manner. Therefore my final decision is a red card, violent conduct.”
The FA has now confirmed that both clubs face charges related to the conduct of their players. Chelsea’s players were accused of behaving in an “improper and/or provocative” manner, while West Ham’s players were charged with being “improper and/or provocative and/or violent.” Both clubs have until Friday to respond to these allegations.
Nuno Espirito Santo said: “It’s frustrating and sad that this game went away from us. The idea is to keep the same, the way we played in the first half. Chelsea were going to react, but we didn’t defend it. Crosses created a lot of problems for us. We have to react. This week, it’s about reacting, bouncing back and going again. We started the second half in control. After Chelsea reacted, we could not control it.”
The charges come after a tense match where Chelsea managed to edge out West Ham with a late winner. The incident in stoppage time marred what was otherwise an intense and competitive fixture. The FA’s decision to charge both clubs highlights the importance of maintaining discipline and control on the pitch, even in high-pressure situations.
Nuno added: “It’s strange, with all this confusion, to give only one yellow and one red card.”
This development adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing Premier League season, as both clubs now face potential disciplinary actions that could impact their upcoming fixtures. The FA’s decision underscores its commitment to upholding the standards of conduct expected in the league.
