Ilia Gruev
Leeds United’s midfielder Ilia Gruev has been making waves this season with his impressive performances, despite not being a regular starter initially. After recovering from a significant knee injury mid-season, Gruev has become an integral part of the team, starting eight Premier League games, including the last four. His presence on the field has coincided with a strong run for Leeds, who have only lost once in the seven league games he has featured in since his return.
Ilia Gruev said: “Of course not. But in England, it’s a culture: players who aren’t playing try to be very positive – and it’s not an act, it’s genuine. That’s different from Germany. Sure, you don’t like it. You’re not going through life happily, everything’s great. You start to worry. And that’s exactly what happened. You have to be mentally strong. That’s what I learned the most.”
Gruev’s journey has not been without its challenges. Initially, he only started two of Leeds’ first 12 games of the season and had to patiently work his way back into the side, partly due to injuries and absences within the squad. The Bulgarian international has shown resilience and mental fortitude, qualities he attributes to the English football culture.
Gruev said: “To be honest, I don’t talk to Daniel that much. I know how he operates and what he expects from me. He also knows what he’s getting from me when he plays me. It’s less about us constantly discussing things – more about him knowing what he’s getting, and me knowing what I need to show. Of course, there are times when you have to wait or don’t get the playing time you’d like. But that’s part of the game, especially at this level.”
Gruev’s understated yet influential presence on the pitch has not gone unnoticed by Leeds manager Daniel Farke. After a crucial win over Fulham, Farke highlighted Gruev’s vital contribution to the team’s success. The 25-year-old midfielder is known for leading by example rather than words, a trait that has earned him respect within the squad.
Gruev said: “He helps us, gives us advice, and simply stays calm. There’s a lot going on in Leeds: fans, media, a lot of attention – it’s easy to get carried away. But he makes sure we stay calm, even when things are going well. We have a shared path, and the goal is clear: to stay in the league. That’s what makes him stand out.”
Manager Daniel Farke’s calm demeanor and objective approach have been instrumental in maintaining team morale, even during challenging times. Gruev appreciates Farke’s ability to remain composed, which has positively influenced the players. As Leeds aims to secure their place in the Premier League, Gruev’s journey of patience and resilience serves as an inspiration to his teammates and fans alike.
