Chelsea FC is reportedly setting its sights on acquiring Stade Rennais’ promising young defender, Jeremy Jacquet, as the January transfer window approaches its closing date. The 20-year-old French Under-21 international has caught the attention of several top European clubs, with Chelsea expressing keen interest in securing his services. Jacquet’s contract at Roazhon Park is set to expire in June 2029, providing a potential long-term investment for the Blues. With new ownership at the helm, Chelsea has shown willingness to invest heavily during the transfer window, and hopes are high for a successful acquisition before the window closes at 7pm on February 2.
Luke Entwistle said: “I would say it was a bit of a perfect storm in terms of his emergence. He was excellent on loan in Ligue 2 in the first half of last season, and so Rennes paid Clermont to bring him back early. His return then coincided with a managerial change and so, as is always the case, the notion of a hierarchy is abolished, and all players have an equal(ish) chance to impress the new manager, Habib Beye in this case. There was this idea that when Saliba got the move, it was at a point that he wasn’t necessarily ready to make that big jump to the Premier League, and I think there could be similar concerns around Jacquet, given his inexperience.”
Luke Entwistle continued: “Very hard to tell if he’s ready for the step, honestly. Leny Yoro and Benoit Badiashile are two cautionary tales, perhaps. What the Saliba example showed is that defenders maybe need more time, and Arsenal’s management of that was ultimately excellent. The nature of the market forces clubs to move on players like Jacquet early, maybe too early. In terms of his personality, he hasn’t done too many interviews or pressers. He did an interview in L’Equipe in which he gave the impression of someone who is very assured of himself, very confident, articulate, too, even if he admits that he perhaps needs to work on being a more vocal presence in the dressing room and on the pitch.”
Jacquet’s rapid rise to prominence has been nothing short of impressive, drawing parallels with Arsenal’s William Saliba, who also honed his skills in the French top flight before establishing himself in the Premier League. However, concerns about Jacquet’s readiness for such a significant step remain. The examples of Leny Yoro and Benoit Badiashile serve as reminders of the challenges young defenders face when transitioning to a league as competitive as the Premier League.
Chelsea’s sporting directors are racing against the clock to finalize the deal, with the club’s recent history of significant January signings providing a backdrop of cautious optimism. As the transfer window deadline approaches, the Blues are hopeful that Jacquet’s potential can be harnessed under their new management structure.
