Nottingham Forest’s Jamie McDonnell has completed a permanent transfer to Oxford United, marking a significant step in the young midfielder’s career. The 21-year-old, who was initially set to spend the season on loan at Mansfield Town, saw his spell with the Stags cut short as Forest opted to recall him for the transfer. McDonnell, who joined Forest’s academy from Glentoran in 2020, spent last season on loan at Colchester United but did not make a first-team appearance for the Reds.
Craig Mulholland said: “We are excited to see Jamie take the next step in his career in a deal which is good for Jamie, good for Oxford, and provides us with a significant return on investment. It will also provide us with considerable benefits as Jamie progresses at Oxford, or should he move on in the future.”
Nigel Clough said: “Forest recalled him on Thursday with a move agreed to a Championship club. They have agreed a fee. We always knew it would be a possibility in January as he has done so well.”
Jamie McDonnell said: “I’m very excited to be here and to get started at Oxford United. It’s a club full of ambition, and that was really important to me as I sign a long-term deal. I feel I’ve learnt a lot from my loan spells and grown with every step I’ve taken so far. I’m ready to challenge myself at this level now and give everything for the team.”
McDonnell’s move to Oxford United signifies a promising opportunity for both the player and the club. Oxford’s ambition aligns with McDonnell’s career goals, providing him with a platform to further develop his skills and contribute significantly to the team. The decision to recall McDonnell from his loan at Mansfield Town underscores Forest’s confidence in his potential to thrive at a higher level. This transfer not only benefits McDonnell but also reflects positively on Forest’s investment in nurturing young talent. As McDonnell embarks on this new chapter, both clubs and the player himself are optimistic about the future prospects.
