Unai Emery
Donyell Malen, the Dutch forward who joined Aston Villa last year, has made a significant move to Serie A club Roma. The transfer comes as Malen seeks more regular playing time as a central striker, a role he was unable to secure under Unai Emery at Villa. With Ollie Watkins fitting Emery’s system more effectively, the move to Roma was deemed beneficial for all parties involved. In his first interview with the Italian club, Malen shared his enthusiasm about the new chapter in his career.
Donyell Malen said: “The fans’ passion, the owners’ ambition, and the club’s goals are what drew me here. This is a great club, and I’m thrilled. Gasperini is very important to this club. He’s done well in the past with other clubs, and his teams have always played good football. The forwards have also always performed well, so I can’t wait to work with him. I prefer to play in the centre. I think I can be more dangerous as a pure striker, create chances for the team, and score goals. So I like that position. I know this league very well; I’ve watched many matches this year and in the past. Serie A has always interested me, and I’m very happy to be here and play in this league.”
Malen added: “I’ve personally never been here. I’ve always heard it’s a beautiful city, one of the most beautiful in Europe. I can’t wait to explore it and discover what it has to offer. I think the Colosseum is extraordinary; I’ve seen lots of photos and I think it’s one of the most beautiful places to visit. I’ve eaten carbonara a few times, but I don’t think it was like the one in Rome, so I’ll try the local carbonara.”
Malen’s move to Roma signifies a fresh start for the forward, who is eager to establish himself as a key player in Serie A. His desire to play as a number nine aligns with Roma’s ambitions and the tactical approach of manager Gian Piero Gasperini, known for his attacking style and ability to get the best out of his forwards. Malen’s familiarity with the Italian league and his eagerness to immerse himself in the culture of Rome further highlight his commitment to making a successful transition.
The transfer also underscores Aston Villa’s strategic decision-making under Unai Emery, as they continue to build a squad that aligns with the manager’s vision. Meanwhile, Malen’s enthusiasm for his new club and city suggests a promising future in Italy, where he hopes to make a significant impact both on and off the pitch.
