David Moyes
Everton manager David Moyes has acknowledged the need for improvement in the club’s home performance following a 4-2 defeat to Brentford at their new waterfront stadium. As the team prepares to host Wolves at Hill Dickinson Stadium, Moyes has called on supporters to maintain their vocal support during this challenging period.
David Moyes said: “But obviously the result would tell you we were well beaten and I wouldn’t disagree with that. I think everybody enjoys going to a new stadium and getting a chance to see it. But I don’t think many people enjoyed going to Goodison and playing at Goodison over the years. That’s not something they really liked.”
“But it’s our new stadium and the other part of it is we started well there. Often when you go to a new stadium you don’t start well. I think it wasn’t always going to go perfect there, that’s for sure, but we’d like to be doing better at the moment.”
“I would suggest it was more to do with the team, it felt like we buckled a wee bit after going a goal down, when we shouldn’t have done for the next 20-30 minutes. We had a chance right on half-time but they had a couple of chances as well.”
“No, the stadium has been magnificent, the support has been fantastic, as always. We’re saying: Keep your voices loud, keep supporting the team. Considering where we’ve been in recent years, we should be right behind the team – the players deserve the support.”
“We get support when we play well and we win. All the time we’re trying to get better and we have to try and do that. But this is a little bit of a difficult period for us and I hope the Everton supporters will understand that as well. We’re a bit short on players, we’ve got a couple away at AFCON, and it’s just making life a little bit more awkward for us.”
“The most difficult spell was when I took over because it was a case of: ‘Would we be good enough to stay up and how do we keep the group of players up?’ It’s a similar time to a year ago because we had a lot of injuries then and we have a few injuries now.”
“But we went to Nottingham Forest without a lot of players and got a brilliant, brilliant result, and I remember the Newcastle game on the last day of last season (we did the same) with players out, so it’s not as if we haven’t done it before. But for Everton Football Club, it’s been a good year, from January to January.”
Everton’s recent home form has been a cause for concern, with the team losing four of their last six matches at the new stadium. Despite a promising start, the atmosphere during the Brentford match was notably flat. Moyes emphasized the importance of fan support, especially as the team faces a challenging period with key players absent due to injuries and international duties at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
As Everton prepares to face Wolves, Moyes remains optimistic, recalling past successes despite similar challenges. He urged fans to continue their unwavering support, highlighting the team’s efforts to improve and overcome the current difficulties.
