Viktor Gyokeres
Viktor Gyokeres, the Sweden international, has made headlines by scoring an impressive 63 goals in 63 appearances for Sporting CP and the Swedish national team. This extraordinary feat not only helped Sporting clinch the Primeira Liga and Taca de Portugal titles but also saw Gyokeres finish as the top scorer in the 2024/25 Nations League. His achievement places him in the company of football legends such as Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland, and Robert Lewandowski, who have all previously won the prestigious award.
Viktor Gyokeres said: “Yes it’s a difficult feeling, scoring is one thing in the moment, it’s a feeling that is difficult to describe because it’s so great. I think it’s a lot of factors, you have to play in a team that create chances, get chances, feel connected with the team and then it’s down to the desire to score.”
Gyokeres made his debut for Arsenal in a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in mid-August, quickly making an impact by scoring twice in his second game against Leeds United. However, he faced challenges during a recent 1-1 draw with Manchester City, where his performance was scrutinized. Despite this, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher came to his defense, emphasizing that the lack of chances created for Gyokeres was the real issue.
Jamie Carragher said on Sky Sports: “It was asked before the show, ‘Is Gyokeres the guy to win them the title?’ And he’s had a little bit of criticism for his performances in the big games away. He hasn’t had a kick today and he might get criticism again on the back of the game today, but I don’t think in those three games he’s had a chance. They haven’t created a chance for him.”
Carragher’s analysis highlights a critical aspect of Arsenal’s gameplay, pointing out that the team’s problem lies not in finishing but in creating opportunities. The former Coventry City and Brighton player has demonstrated his scoring prowess, but the need for better support and chance creation remains evident.
Gyokeres’ journey from Coventry City to becoming a top scorer in the Nations League underscores his development and potential as a key player for Arsenal. His ability to score consistently at the highest level is a testament to his talent and determination, and with improved team dynamics, he could become a pivotal figure in Arsenal’s quest for success.
