Fulham secured their first Premier League win of the season in dramatic fashion at Craven Cottage, defeating Leeds United 1-0 thanks to a late own goal by Gabriel Gudmundsson. The victory came after a tense match where Fulham struggled to break down a well-organized Leeds side. Marco Silva, Fulham’s manager, acknowledged the element of luck involved in their win, particularly given the circumstances of the decisive goal.
Marco Silva said: “Definitely a tight game, very difficult in some moments to break them down. You felt straightaway the changes that Daniel [Farke] made to his team were to be much more conservative out wide, control better our left-hand side – and they did it. With good organisation it is not easy to break them down. In the first half, we were probably too slow. We did not take too many risks and we were too slow, then it is difficult to break them down. They had one good shot from a second ball. I think second half we were much better, more dynamic. In these moments, you can have a bit of fatigue and in the last 30 minutes we did create some dangerous moments around their box. Great header from Rodrigo, we should have scored. An own goal in the last minute of the game so we have to feel a bit fortunate. A nice feeling for us, a difficult feeling for Daniel and the Leeds boys but that is part of the game. It was important for us to keep a clean sheet because we need to create this habit and it allowed us to go on and try to win the game.”
Fulham’s £34.6 million deadline-day signing, Kevin, was introduced late in the match, and his long-range effort was expertly saved by Leeds’ goalkeeper Karl Darlow. The subsequent corner, delivered by Sasa Lukic, led to Gudmundsson’s unfortunate own goal, sealing the win for Fulham. Despite the victory, Silva was candid about the challenges his team faced, particularly in breaking down Leeds’ defensive setup. He noted that Leeds’ manager, Daniel Farke, had made tactical adjustments that made it difficult for Fulham to exploit the flanks.
The win was crucial for Fulham, not only for the points but also for the morale boost of keeping a clean sheet. Silva emphasized the importance of building a habit of defensive solidity, which would serve as a foundation for future performances. For Leeds, the loss was a bitter pill to swallow, especially given their disciplined display throughout the match.
This match highlighted the unpredictable nature of football, where a single moment can change the outcome. Fulham will aim to build on this result, while Leeds will look to regroup and address the areas that led to their narrow defeat.
