Everton’s summer transfer window saw significant changes as the club aimed to strengthen its squad for the new season. Under the guidance of manager David Moyes, Everton made nine new signings, including the notable acquisitions of Jack Grealish on loan from Manchester City and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall on a permanent deal from Chelsea. Sean Dyche, reflecting on the transfer activities, revealed that the club had been interested in these players for some time, despite financial uncertainties and ownership issues that previously hindered their acquisition.
Sean Dyche said: “Dewsbury-Hall, we were trying for, Jack Grealish, we went in for, but you’ve got to remember – and I don’t mean we were close, so before anyone misquotes me, what I mean is we were putting out the calls, Kev Thelwell [former director of football] was going into these situations going: ‘Right, can we?’ You get in there early and you just keep registering your interest.”
Dyche emphasized the club’s long-standing interest in Dewsbury-Hall and Grealish, explaining that Everton had been tracking these players through multiple transfer windows. The club’s former director of football, Kev Thelwell, played a crucial role in maintaining this interest, ensuring Everton was well-positioned to make a move when the opportunity arose. Despite the challenges faced last year, including financial constraints, Everton’s persistence paid off with the successful signing of Grealish, whose early performances have been impressive.
Sean Dyche said: “I think Grealish, not questioning Pep Guardiola [Man City boss] or their style at all, but Pep wants you to pop it and move more whereas Grealish, he carries it, doesn’t he? And he’s carried it well so far. Maybe that bigger fish in a smaller pool suits him. I don’t know yet, but I think he’s a fantastic player. I will say that. And I think he’s started fantastically well.”
Grealish’s impact on the field has been immediate, contributing four assists in key victories over Brighton and Wolves. His performances have earned him a nomination for the Premier League player of the month accolade. Dyche praised Grealish’s ability to adapt and excel in Everton’s setup, suggesting that the environment might be more suited to his playing style compared to Manchester City. The manager expressed hope that Grealish’s influence would inspire other players and elevate the team’s overall performance.
Everton’s strategic approach to player recruitment, as highlighted by Dyche, demonstrates the club’s commitment to building a competitive squad. The successful integration of Grealish and Dewsbury-Hall, alongside other signings, marks a positive start to the season for the Blues. As the campaign progresses, Everton fans will be eager to see how these new additions continue to shape the team’s fortunes.
