Jose Mourinho
Fenerbahce’s president, Ali Koc, has shed light on the decision to part ways with Jose Mourinho, emphasizing that the move was prompted by the club’s aspiration for more attractive football. Despite the club’s Champions League play-off exit, Koc clarified that this was not a factor in the decision to dismiss the renowned manager. Mourinho’s tenure at Fenerbahce was cut short as the club sought to enhance their style of play and break their long-standing league title drought.
Alic Koc said: “Why did we fire Mourinho? I’ll say it for the first time, it was a painful dismissal. Parting ways with someone who is above all a friend was tough. Being eliminated by Benfica wasn’t a problem, but the way we were eliminated was unacceptable. This made me feel like last year’s football would continue. We parted ways because we believed this squad would be playing better football at this point.”
Koc continued: “We knew our coach would put emphasis on defence when we brought him in, but we talked about the need to play more dominantly at the end of the season. Scoring 99 goals and getting 99 points is our genetic code.”
Under Mourinho’s leadership, Fenerbahce failed to clinch the league title, finishing 11 points behind their fierce rivals, Galatasaray. The club also faced an early exit from the Europa League at the hands of Rangers, who were managed by interim boss Barry Ferguson. Despite these setbacks, Koc praised Mourinho’s impact at the club, describing his appointment as a “huge success” due to the chemistry and successes achieved during his tenure.
Koc is now on the lookout for a new manager with European experience, after being turned down by former Napoli manager Luciano Spalletti. The Fenerbahce president expressed a preference for a foreign coach, given the club’s roster of international players.
The decision to dismiss Mourinho underscores Fenerbahce’s commitment to evolving their playing style and achieving long-term success. As they continue their search for a new manager, the club remains focused on restoring their dominance in Turkish football and ending their title drought.
