In a thrilling encounter, Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper James Beadle played a pivotal role in England Under-21s’ progression to the semi-finals of the tournament, following a 3-1 victory over Spain. The match, held in Trnava, saw England take an early lead with two goals inside the first 15 minutes, before Spain reduced the deficit with a penalty just before halftime. Beadle’s crucial double save was instrumental in securing the win for the defending champions.
James Beadle said: “I should have caught the first one but it was good reactions – I’m happy with that. We knew it was going to be a hard game and we would have to be on top of our game to win it. We had to deal with a lot of neat, intricate play down the side and we did it really well. Hinsh on the left, Tino (Livramento) and the two centre-halves did a really good shift.”
Lee Carsley said: “The big thing is this can’t be our final.”
Beadle’s performance was complemented by the solid defensive work of left-back Jack Hinshelwood and his fellow defenders, who managed to contain Spain’s intricate play. Despite conceding a penalty to Javi Guerra, which brought Spain back into the game, Beadle’s subsequent double save proved vital in maintaining England’s lead.
Looking ahead, England is set to face Holland on Wednesday. However, they will be without midfielder Tyler Morton, who received a second yellow card of the tournament. This opens up the possibility for Hinshelwood to start in midfield against the Dutch, although Elliot Anderson, who was benched against Spain, could also return to the starting lineup. Manager Lee Carsley has expressed confidence in Hinshelwood’s versatility, noting his ability to transition from full-back to midfield during play.
The upcoming match against Holland is crucial for England as they aim to continue their journey in the tournament, with Carsley emphasizing the importance of not viewing the semi-final as their ultimate goal. The team remains focused on progressing further and defending their title successfully.
