Aston Villa is set to face financial penalties for breaching European squad cost regulations, as they aim to avoid further violations in the upcoming season. The club is under pressure to comply with UEFA’s financial rules, which stipulate that clubs cannot allocate more than 80% of their revenue on player wages, transfers, and agents’ fees—a figure set to decrease to 70% next season. To address this, Villa is considering offloading high earners such as goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez and full-back Lucas Digne.
The Athletic reported: “Villa have a lot of saleable assets. Martinez’s exit could solve the most headaches, with the Argentina No 1 fetching a sizeable fee. He is the highest earner of any permanent player and would alleviate PSR and UEFA SCR concerns. Digne is another option. Neither player is being forced out.”
In response to these financial challenges, Aston Villa’s scouting team is preparing for various scenarios, including potential player replacements. The club is expected to target lower-tier players in terms of transfer fees and salaries, focusing on identifying high-potential, cost-effective talent.
The Athletic further explained: “Villa’s scouting team have planned for a multitude of scenarios – including what players replace certain departures. Villa are likely to be shopping for a lower tier of player, in a transfer fee and salary sense. This does not suggest players are second, third and maybe fourth options, it means the recruitment team will have to be cannier in spotting high-potential, lower-cost players.”
Other players who might be on the move include Leon Bailey, who has attracted interest from Saudi clubs, and Philippe Coutinho, who Villa is eager to part ways with despite having a year left on his contract. Emiliano Buendia, currently on loan at Bayer Leverkusen, and Leander Dendoncker, on loan at Anderlecht, are also unlikely to return to their respective clubs permanently.
Perhaps the most intriguing potential exit involves Ollie Watkins. Villa had previously considered selling either Watkins or Jhon Duran in January, ultimately parting ways with Duran. However, Watkins’ future remains uncertain, with Arsenal reportedly monitoring his situation closely.
The Athletic noted: “PSR means Villa cannot carry multiple top-level players for one spot. They accepted they had to sell Jhon Duran or Watkins in January, and although the former ended up leaving they were not opposed to the latter departing. This is pertinent this summer, with Watkins expecting clarity on his future.”
As Aston Villa navigates these financial constraints, the club’s ability to balance player sales with strategic acquisitions will be crucial in maintaining competitiveness while adhering to UEFA’s financial regulations.
