Nottingham Forest Reflect on Season of Progress Despite Final Day Disappointment

Matz Sels

Nottingham Forest ended their Premier League campaign with a sense of frustration after narrowly missing out on a top-five finish and Champions League qualification. Despite the setback, the club remains optimistic about their future prospects, having secured a spot in the UEFA Conference League. The season concluded with a 1-0 defeat to Chelsea, yet there were notable achievements and moments of pride for the Reds.

Matz Sels said: “It’s a big achievement so I’m really happy but not only for me but for the team. It means we had a great season, almost the whole season on a Champions League spot. Sadly we couldn’t finish it but we need to be proud of the season we’ve had. We will play in Europe. When I came last year, I came in a difficult situation (battling for Premier League survival). This kind of achievement is always from the team.”

Miltiadis said: “What a season! Congratulations to all our players and staff on a fantastic campaign. We wanted more – but we fought with pride throughout. Thank you to our fans for your unbelievable support all year. We’ll be back even stronger next season. Dream it. Believe it. Do it.”

Matz Sels, who shared the Golden Glove award with Arsenal’s David Raya, became the first goalkeeper outside the traditional top clubs to win the accolade since its inception in 2004/05. His performance was a testament to the team’s defensive solidity over the season. Meanwhile, the club’s seventh-place finish in the Premier League is a significant improvement, considering their recent battles against relegation.

Nottingham Forest now face crucial decisions in the transfer market, including the potential permanent signing of Aston Villa loanee Alex Moreno. However, Moreno’s recent social media post suggests he may not continue with the club, as he was absent from the squad against Chelsea and has not played since April.

The club’s financial outlook also sees a boost, with Premier League prize money set to be distributed. While the exact figures are not yet confirmed, Forest can expect a substantial sum, aiding their plans to strengthen Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad for the next season.

As the team takes a well-deserved break, the focus shifts to building on the progress made and addressing areas for improvement. The Reds aim to return stronger, with a view to challenging for higher honors in the upcoming season.
