Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta hinted at Leandro Trossard’s potential inclusion in the starting lineup against Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League semi-final. With Thomas Partey suspended, Arteta adjusted his lineup, showcasing the team’s adaptability and versatility.
In the lead-up to the UEFA Champions League semi-final clash against Paris Saint-Germain, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta considered Leandro Trossard for a starting position. The Gunners are set to host Luis Enrique’s side at the Emirates Stadium, but they will be without key midfielder Thomas Partey. Partey, 31, received his third yellow card of the campaign in a recent victory over Real Madrid, resulting in a one-match suspension for the opening tie against PSG on April 29.
Arteta’s tactical adjustments were evident in Arsenal’s recent 4-0 triumph over Ipswich Town, where he opted to reposition Mikel Merino in midfield and push Trossard into the frontline. Trossard rewarded Arteta’s decision by scoring twice, demonstrating his readiness for a more prominent role.
Mikel Arteta said: “Yeah, he’s certainly ready to play in any position. We have to make certain adjustments, not because of PSG but because of the situation we had with Thomas [Partey] and a few other players. But that’s good because the team shows adaptability, versatility for certain players to play in different positions and that’s very much needed, especially when we have the numbers that we have at the moment.”
Arteta also commented on Merino’s return to midfield, a position he has played throughout his career. The manager acknowledged the challenges posed by squad depth and player positioning.
Arteta continued: “Yeah, well, that’s where he’s played his whole career. But obviously, we have a very short memory sometimes, and we see him as a nine and now it’s almost strange to see him in midfield. I think he did really well.”
During the Ipswich Town match, there was a moment of concern when Bukayo Saka went down in the first half. Arteta expressed his initial worry but confirmed that Saka was fine.
Arteta said: “I do, especially with the numbers that we have right now and especially when they are back to goal, because normally it’s the moment when the foot is planted, your weight is there, and you cannot really react to it, but he’s fine.”
The Arsenal manager emphasized the team’s willingness to maintain their rhythm, despite the challenges posed by a packed schedule.
Arteta added: “The good thing is they are willing to play because they like the rhythm as well. We are so used to that rhythm every three days that the boys are demanding and then we don’t have a game at the weekend.”
As Arsenal prepares for their crucial semi-final match against PSG, Arteta’s strategic decisions and the squad’s adaptability will be key factors in their quest for Champions League glory.
