Manchester City’s coach, Pep Guardiola, recently responded to suggestions about the team’s strategy involving Erling Haaland, the efficient striker. The team has been successful since Haaland joined in the summer of 2022, with a few trophies to their credit. Haaland’s performance, however, is dependent on the service he receives from his teammates. Savinho, in particular, has been instrumental in setting up goals for Haaland, with five assists in just 16 starts together. This is in stark contrast to other senior members of the squad, such as Jack Grealish and Jeremy Doku, who have not been as successful in assisting Haaland.
Guardiola defended Savinho’s position in the team after Saturday’s game.
Guardiola said “Is there someone in this room [who thinks] Savinho doesn’t deserve to play right now? No. He deserves. That’s why I play him because he produces. A goal the other day, against Everton he was brilliant and at Leicester he made the first goal and today made a goal and two unbelievable assists, the second goal from the beginning. That is top, so that’s why he played.”
The coach’s comments highlight the importance of not just scoring goals, but also assisting in them. As Grealish and Doku look to regain their positions in Guardiola’s team, supplying Haaland with opportunities to score is a surefire way to secure their place in the starting XI, as Savinho has demonstrated.
