Leeds striker Lee Chapman was set to celebrate his 33rd birthday and was hoping to maintain a proud Elland Road scoring record. Chapman faced his former club Nottingham Forest who was boosted by the knowledge that he had scored in all but one of Leeds’ eight home Premier League games that season. Manager Howard Wilkinson was set to select an unchanged team for the third successive match. Despite their poor recent form, Leeds had not lost at home and bottom of the table Forest had failed to win away in the premier league that season.

Striker Eric Cantona posed a dilemma for Alex Ferguson as the Manchester United manager pondered his selection for the upcoming 117th Manchester Derby at Old Trafford. Ferguson’s biggest headache in whether to include United’s new signing from the start or name him as a substitute. Bryan Robson (Thigh), Paul Ince (Groin) and Lee Sharpe (calf) all added to Ferguson’s problems. Whereas their city neighbors Manchester City waiting for a fitness check Ian Brightwell who missed previous Saturday’s home defeat by Spurs with a badly gashed shin.

The World’s most powerful footballing had been asked to decide that morning if Liverpool were to be offered a reprieve in the European Winners Cup. Lawyers from UEFA, the European Governing body, one day earlier called upon FIFA to rule on the row over the eligibility one of Spartak Moscow’s players when they eliminated Liverpool a month earlier. If Spartak were held responsible for Rusayev’s appearance in four cup winners cup games, they were likely to be expelled from the competition. If, on the other hand, FIFA advise that Spartak were victims of an administrative error by the Russian Football Association, the national FA will carry the can.

Premier league’s highest-spending club Blackburn Rovers had launched a dramatic £5 million bid to bring David Platt back to England in a deal that could comfortably break the British Transfer Record. Platt, who was recovering from a knee operation, had failed to win a regular place with Juventus since his close-season move from Bari. Reports in Italy suggested that the Turin giant was prepared to offload the England midfielder before the end of the season. They were preparing his replacement in the former Tottenham player Paul Gascoigne who was with Lazio at that point in time.
